With the Curtin Careers Fair on this week, it’s important to realise that simply attending won’t give you all of the answers you want.
Careers fairs are an excellent way for you to explore opportunities in your preferred industry and to make contact with potential employers. It can also help you set your goals and determine the next steps to take in order to get your dream job.
Here are the easiest ways you can maximise the real value of a careers fair:
- Read up on who’s going
Most career fairs release a full list of exhibitors before the event actually takes place – so why not find the ones that interest you? This means that you not only save time searching for opportunities that are relevant to your degree, but you can also research key information about companies and positions you’re interested in – which shows that you’re actually serious about being a part of their team. - Prepare and practice your introduction
Creating a great first impression to potential employers could be the reason why you’re offered an internship position, or why they may remember you for a role in their organisation. Include basic information about yourself and your career goals, as well as why you’re interested in their company. - Actually engage with exhibitors
Be present in the conversation and feel free to ask questions. Whether you’re wanting to find out more about your dream company or exciting programs to take part in, this is your opportunity to gather more information about a whole range of opportunities. Make sure that you leave the conversation with a clear understanding of what they’re looking for, what they can offer you and, more importantly, what you can offer them. - Confidence is key
Whether this means dressing to impress or starting the day with an iced coffee to put a spring in your step, displaying confidence shows employers that you’re ready to put yourself out there. Be confident when speaking about yourself, have a positive attitude and remember to maintain eye contact.
The Curtin Careers Fair will be held on Wednesday 13 March 2019, at Curtin Stadium, Bentley Campus.
You can bring along your resume for review by one of our team, attend an employer presentation and, if you’re in a creative degree, book some time to network with an industry professional.
