Have you considered an interstate internship?

Have you considered an interstate internship?

We all know that getting relevant work experience is one of the best things you can do to improve your graduate employability. But… it’s also no secret that sometimes it’s easier said than done.

If you can lock down an internship or work experience placement in Perth, you’re set to get some really valuable experience. However, given that Western Australia represents only approximately 7% of Marketing, Advertising and Public Relations jobs in Australia, you may have better luck looking interstate.

We spoke to Jordan Lomax, Social Communications & Graphic Designer with OMD, about her internship with Media Federation Australia:

“Getting a four week full time internship at a media agency in Sydney or Melbourne lets you spend a couple of days in every department, which gives you a really good idea of what job you’re after. It completely changed my mind on what I wanted to do! Even if you don’t plan to move over east, if you can commit to the internship then it would look awesome on your resume. Some people also get jobs through the internship.”

As Jordan’s mentioned, you don’t need to move interstate. If you can afford to take some time out, look at it as a chance to explore a new city; build your national industry knowledge and networks; and, as a serious investment in your career – you’ll return as a much more competitive candidate than when you left. Bon voyage!
