TESOL, TEFL, ESL… Teaching English to Non-Native Speakers

TESOL, TEFL or ESL… With so many acronyms relating to teaching English to those whose native language is something different it can get a little confusing! Vic TESOL has, therefore, handily provided an acronyms chart to assist with the definitions.

If you are in this field or considering it, your main representing body would then be the Australian Council of TESOL Associations (ACTA), which is the national coordinating body for all associations of Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) across Australia. To access the ACTA, you would join as a member of a state branch – student membership ranges between $30 and $55 per year depending upon the State Branch.

Visit your state’s website for more information:

ACT – ATESOL ACT
NSW – ATESOL NSW
NT – ATESOL NT
QLD – QATESOL
SA – SA TESOL
TAS – TasTESOL
VIC – VicTESOL
WA – WATESOL

Amongst other things, ACTA provides access to resources, publications and participation in an annual conference (which is in Melbourne this year). Even better, they also provide links to employment and working professionally in this field and have kindly collated resources from all branches on one web page.
