Job Application Advice for Graduate Teachers

As Education students, you are pretty lucky. Resources on job applications are plentiful!

The Department of Education in Western Australia provides comprehensive information on creating resumes and cover letters including a basic resume sample. Note, however, that presentation requirements tend to change. For example, now they ask for resumes to be created in a sans serif font with a font size of 11, previously the size requested was 10.

Be very careful to follow any instructions provided in relation to presentation and layout.

The Australian Public Service Commission has also put together generic information on addressing selection criteria in their ‘Cracking the Code’ publication.

Curtin Careers & Employment Centre has created a Targeted_Education_Resume_Sample for teachers. However, don’t forget that you are unique! Your experience, skills, attributes and your reflection will differ from the next person. Templates are something to be built upon not just to be used to regurgitate basis facts in a set order. It is also important that you bring your personality to the forefront. Principals are looking for passion, commitment and engagement. This needs to transcend onto paper (read: Word Processed) documents.

If you would like more assistance with creating job application documents or would like to have your resume reviewed, then please contact us via telephone (08) 9266 7802 or email: [email protected]. If you get through to that coveted final stage in the job application process, you can even schedule a mock interview prior to the real thing. We are also flexible and can connect with students in person, by telephone or Skype.
